According to Laura Cohen, "the game of poker is growing in popularity in South Africa" who cited the following signs:

-The All-Africa Poker Championship was held last month in Swaziland at the Piggs Peak Casino, attended by 90 players from around the world.

-Online poker bulletin boards, such as www.poker.org.za., are allowing fans to talk about the game and set up tourneys. The site has 489 members.

-Sun International has 31 poker tables at 11 casinos nationwide, said director of Compliance and Tables, Jaco Coetzee.

And unlike other countries, regulation may be around the corner as Cohen reported, "in December, Cabinet approved a Draft Gambling Amendment Bill to regulate online and cellphone gambling."
