Playing THe Donkaments
08 Jun 10
For online poker players and other enthusiasts heading to the World Series of Poker for the first time, selecting the best fields to play seems like a key way to establishing an edge and making the biggest return for your dollar. With the addition of plenty more $1000 no limit holdem events to supposedly cope with the global financial crisis, players now face massive fields for all the low buy in events along with the expected 8000 players for the main event.

Massive fields in poker terminology will mean one important factor, variance. Expect to see it, expect to feel it, Phil Ivey himself cannot guarantee himself win with the type of structures and having to survive every single race and coin flip situation that will be presented over and over again in the race to the bracelet. The lower buyins will present softer tables where people raise to 10 times the big blind or will check call down to the river, this might mean easy fish in the early blinds, but faster structures will mean you have to gamble to stay ahead.

The solution to all this is to look for the events with smaller fields. This will mean all the bigger buy in tournaments and also the mixed games. All the low variants of poker and the fixed betting styles like stud will mean they are less popular. This does mean that you have to pick up on your other poker variations and practice on their tournament play rather than just playing holdem. Having an edge in these events will mean you will be able to navigate smaller fields and realise a much stronger ROI than in all the donkaments.
