Thailand Debates Online Lottery
8th January 2010

Thailand is at the cusp of legislating on legal online lottery but is receiving last minute nerves over the uncertain impact that online lottery will have on the local community. Prime Minister of Thailand, Abhisit Vejjajiva is on the negative side of the fence and feels that there will be too many negative possibilities and has formed a committee to help dismantle the situation.

Thailand’s government lottery office signed up Loxley GTech Technology in 2005 to manage the country’s online lottery with 2006 the previous start date of the venture. Red tape has ensured that the online lottery has still yet to get off the ground. The leader of the opposition, Surapong Towijackchaikul, has argued that without a legal online lottery agent, underground lottery bookmakers will grow and the state would lose lots of gambling tax funds to fund important sectors like education.
