Two very lucky lottery players have won the first major jackpot in the Lotto Max game held in Canada. The $50 million dollar jackpot has been awarded to the lucky players where the odds of winning such a prize is roughly one in 29 million. What is even more fortunate is that the winning is completely tax free for the couple, a very rare phenomenon on a global scale.
The Canadian gambling tax law states that only if the winnings are won on ‘professional’ terms, then it will be completely tax free. So winnings from such non professional gambling endeavours like playing the lottery can be exempt from any gambling taxes. Much of the proceeds from the ticket sales already go towards government revenue, charities and other not for profit organisations so there is no need to tax a second time on the winner.
