While Michael Vick’s plea bargain dominates the headlines on the sports and news websites North America over, there is an NFL season that teams are prepping for.
While teams have finished auditioning players for spots on their rosters, game lines have been available for a few weeks and futures odds have been available for even longer.
Here are some teams that have a legitimate shot at the Vince Lombardi trophy.
American Football Conference
Indianapolis Colts (+700)
The defending Super Bowl champions might have a hard time repeating as a number of key players left in the offseason—that always seems to happen to teams going for back-to-back titles.
But they still have Peyton Manning behind center and who has gotten the playoff monkey off his shoulders.
New England Patriots (+160)
It seemed like a case of déjà vu all over again. It was the AFC championship game; it was the Colts and Patriots; the Pats had an 18-point lead at one point and the Colts were being dominated by their conference rivals yet again.
But what started off looking like the movie Groundhog Day ended off with a Usual Suspects like plot twist. Peyton Manning led the troops to an improbable comeback victory and finally a berth in the Super Bowl.
Seeing Manning finally win the big one was salt in the wounds of coach Belichick and QB Tom Brady and the team sought to reload for 2007.
WR Randy Moss and DE Adalius Thomas are only two of the players who have been signed to bolster a New England roster that is good enough to be the odds on to win the 2008 Super Bowl in the eyes of many sportsbooks.
San Diego Chargers (+600)
They’ve lost the head coach (Marty Schottenheimer) and offensive coordinator (Cam Cameron) that were integral to last year’s 14-2 regular season, but they still have TE Antonio Gates, WR Vincent Jackson and RB LaDainian Tomlinson who are integral to the offense that helped with the 14-2 record.
