feature Dolphins Live Home Dog by Chad Wilson 22 September, 2005
It seems that the Irish luck has run out three weeks into the season. The
green of Michigan St. is not a color that has been good to Notre Dame in recent
years under any coach. Florida St. and Florida flexed their muscles in their
big matchups as did the Miami Hurricanes but they need overtime to get their
point across. In the pros, Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens maintained their “professional” relationship
to the chagrin of the rest of the league. The duo hooked up for two touchdowns
in Philadelphia 's 42-3 rout of the 49ers. Brett Favre and the Packers start
the season off 0-2 and for the first time in NFL history, both the Packers
and Vikings have started off the season 0-2. It will be interesting to see
what the end result of that occurrence will be. This week, I am going to the
college ranks to find one winner and I have a pair of solid ones from the NFL.
Last week's record in Winner's Edge paper: 2-1
Season Record: 4-2 ATS
NCAA : BYU (-3.5) over TCU What do we know about the
TCU Horned Frogs. At this point, they are one of the hard teams to figure out.
They go out in week one and beat the Oklahoma Sooners in one of the great upsets.
Then they can't get it done versus SMU. Last week, they went on national television
and took out the Utah Utes ending their long winning streak. I have seen this
situation many a time and what typically happens is that the team the pulls
the upset goes out the next week and plays like a chump. TCU has already experience
that this year and history has a way of repeating itself. I expect TCU to be
somewhat flat in this contest while BYU sees a big opportunity here. The Cougars
have already suffered a loss this season and are not looking to fall under
.500 and lose their first two home games of the season. Expect the Cougars
to be very prepared and quite intense as they look to take out the team with
two big upsets under their belt this season. Take BYU
NFL: Tennessee (+6.5) over St. Louis
Oddsmakers are treating Tennessee 's win over Baltimore last week as a fluke,
but I don't think that it is. Tennessee pulled themselves together after the
Week 1 set back versus what appears to be a very strong Pittsburgh team. The
Titans held the Ravens to less than 50 yards rushing in their 25-10 win. Need
I remind you that Jamal Lewis plays for the Baltimore Ravens? This was no small
feat by the Titans and thus should be given more respect than they are getting
from the linesmaker here.
St. Louis has done little to impress me two games into this season. They were
handled by the 49ers in their opener and struggled to get a win over the Cardinals
in week two. After back-to-back games out West, St. Louis may be a bit out
of whack when they return home and they will also be a bit complacent after
getting the win last week. Tennessee comes into this game feeling like they
have something to prove. Besides, the Titans still hold that grudge against
St. Louis since they came up one yard short in the Super Bowl. Take Tennessee .
NFL: Miami (+3.5) over Carolina
The Dolphins aren't going to be a team that gets much respect in the early
part of this season. However, the lack of respect allows them to have some
value and we should take advantage. Off the loss to the Jets last week, I think
the Dolphins carry some good value as a home dog in this situation. Over the
last six season, Miami is 5-2 ATS the week after losing to the Jets. Miami
played a solid game defensively after putting up a good defensive effort in
Week 1 versus the Broncos. When you are playing good defense in the NFL, you
are a good value as an underdog, especially at home.
Carolina is co ming off of a big win over the defending World Champs. I am
willing to bet that the numbers are not good for teams the week after beating
last week's Super Bowl champ. With Carolina being in that situation this week
and having the burden of being a road favorite, I think it to be in our best
interest to go against them here. The Panthers' defense has underachieved thus
far on the season and that makes them a poor choice in this matchup. Take the Dolphins.
That's how I see them this week. We are still within the first three week
period of the football season, so I recommend all wagers to continue to remain
light. Let's feel these teams out and see what they have before we put our
foot firmly on the pedal.
See you next week with your pockets a little heavier.
