900Pay: No Credit Card? No Problem!
by Angi Cividino, WINNERonline.com
03 September 2002

These Internet casinos use 900Pay:

InterCasino
Omni Casino
Colosseum Casino

900Pay is a new way to buy chips at Internet casinos. With 900Pay you don't even need a credit card. All you need is your telephone. There are no long-distance charges, no additional fees and all online transactions will appear on your monthly phone bill as a Navaho Networks purchase.

How Does It Work?

900Pay is a relatively new B2C (Business-to-Consumer) product developed by Navaho Networks Inc., a Canadian-based start-up founded in 1999 by brothers Mark and Andre Itwaru, and founded on the principle that 60% of online users still do not make any Web purchases for fear of credit card fraud.

"We're basically a credit card-free billing alternative that allows home shoppers to purchase online content, with the cost of their purchases going to their phone bill" says Mark Itwaru, CEO of Navaho Networks. "And it's so easy to use."

Because the technology behind 900Pay allows you to go offline through a private network to connect with your telephone carrier, you don't have to worry about providing personal information over the public Internet. And for cable and high-speed Internet users, that means ensuring your computer is dial-up ready.

When you're ready to play, simply choose 900Pay as your method of payment, enter the amount you wish to deposit, (and then from there you'll be asked to read a list of terms and conditions). Click to proceed and wait for verification.

What's the Catch?

  • You have to be living in an area that supports 1-900 numbers, or one that doesn't impose any 1-900 blocks on your telephone. (You can have the block removed.) For the most part, this applies only to U.S. residents.
  • You have to dial out on your own phone. ("This way you can't just run over to your neighbor's and rack up a bunch of charges on his phone bill," says Mark Itwaru. "If the names don't match, we drop the call.")
  • 900Pay is a deposit mechanism only. Withdrawals are handled by the casinos.

Where Can You Find 900Pay?

Andre Edelbrock, Director of Payment Solutions at CryptoLogic, was responsible for launching 900Pay at Intercasino.com on August 23, 2002. "We were looking for a non-credit card payment solution, and with 900Pay it opens up a new customer base," Andre Edelbrock says. "This is especially good for customers who don't want to provide credit card or banking information online."

Obviously, the service is still new to Intercasino and there hasn't been much feedback - yet. "A lot of customers have been sniffing around and chatting about it on the message boards, and then registering with 900Pay." Andre Edelbrock says. "There's a lot of up-front screening," he adds. "But if you want to play right away, it's a friendly offering."
