The International Federation of Poker (IFP) has managed to lobby the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) to accept that poker is a mind sport rather than a game of pure luck or chance. This means that poker is now on the same ranks as chess and bridge and will feature in the IMSA’s World Mind Sports Games due to be run in 2012 in London. The president of the IMSA Jose Damlani was very keen to welcome poker as a game of strategic skill.
The IFP sees the decision as a major success in their campaign in educating the world that poker is a game of skill and not a game of chance and should not be viewed upon in the same light as roulette or baccarat. The aim is to ensure poker is freed from government interference and allowed to naturally grow in popularity. Poker legend Doyle Brunson sits on the board of the IFP and is very happy over the announcement that poker is a skills game by the IMSA.
