Phuket Police Issue Warning
11th of June 2010

Police in Thailand’s Phuket are setting a major operation for cracking down on illegal gambling in the popular beach tourist destination. With the World Cup only days away, many locals and tourists are expected to make bets and police want to make sure that only legal gambling is facilitated and to minimise illegal gambling shops. Soccer is a major past time in Thailand, with Phuket one of the major hotspots with so many foreigners there tuning in to watch the tournament.

Phuket police are also targeting any people facilitating gambling with children. Underage gambling is considered a major problem in Thailand, with police ready to arrest all illegal gambling activities to ensure minors know that it is a crime. During the UEFO Euro 2008 tournament, Phuket police arrested 151 people in 52 gambling cases, in the last world cup, 229 arrests were made in 70 illegal gambling cases.
