Online Gamblers Outraged At Censorship 17th February 2010
Much like the debate that is heating up in Australia, Indonesia is on the brink of implementing an online filtering rule that may mean prohibiting online gambling sites from Indonesian citizens. The Indonesian Minister of Information and Communications has released plans to filter the internet content accessible by Indonesians and much of it is targeted at pornography and all other illegal activities. Since Indonesia has a large muslim population, gambling is on the list of targeted websites to be prohibited.
Many young Indonesians use online gambling to relax and enjoy light gambling online. Many of the country’s youths are protesting the law and have already joined groups on Facebook and sign petitions to make sure their voices are heard. Journalists have also joined in the debate, stating that prohibiting the internet is one of the basic freedoms that will be taken away from Indonesia’s citizens.
