Louisiana State against (fill in the blank).
Don't wait until early December to give me the team that will play LSU in the Bowl Championship Series title game. I'd like to know now.
But in a season where Appalachian State, Stanford, Syracuse and others have demonstrated that the safest place to store those preseason predictions is a paper shredder, I'm wondering if the smartest prediction for the BCS title game is this one:
Team to Be Named Later vs. Team to Be Named Much, Much Later.
We've reached the halfway point of the college football season. If the second half mirrors the first, college football could be racing toward its George Mason moment.
You know, something outrageous, set to a "Don't Stop Believing" soundtrack, like Boston College playing South Florida.
Locally, imagine Kentucky and Indiana playing in bowl games while Louisville stays home. Huh?
But before the speculation gets too thick, let's see where we are in this bizarre season.
Turnover Ratio: Try 40 percent. That's how many teams (10 of 25) have already vanished from The Associated Press preseason Top 25, making room for ambitious visitors such as Kentucky and Arizona State.
Unbeaten Club: We're down to 11 -- one from the Southeastern (LSU), Big Ten (Ohio State), Atlantic Coast (Boston College) and Western Athletic (Hawaii) conferences; two from the Pacific-10 (California and Arizona State) and Big 12 (Missouri and Kansas) and three from the Big East (Cincinnati, South Florida and Connecticut).
Next Unbeaten Likely To Stumble: Missouri. The Tigers visit Oklahoma on Saturday. The same Oklahoma that has won 16 of 17 against Mizzou.
Price Check: According to my research there are 49 coaches earning at least $1 million this season.
Eight members of Millionaire's Row are currently delivering losing seasons. Charlie Weis of Notre Dame is producing at the rate of $3.3 million per victory, and Kirk Ferentz of Iowa is the runner-up at $1.42 million for each of his two victories.
