No Safe Bets Halfway Through This Wild Season

Best Buy: Rich Brooks of Kentucky.

That's what my research shows. Brooks is making the smallest amount (about $729,165) of the guys with programs currently in the Top 25. Brooks is one of four Top 25 coaches who aren't in the Millionaire's Club.

Biggest Upset: For three weeks, it was Appalachian State toppling Michigan. For two weeks, it was Syracuse delivering as a 36 ½-point underdog against Louisville.

Not today. Not after Stanford -- and its second-string quarterback -- whipped Southern California as a 41-point underdog last Saturday night.

What's next?

If you believe that being sore, emotionally drained and dangerously overconfident makes a team vulnerable, you might keep an eye on this LSU team that visits Kentucky on Saturday. The Tigers just survived their Ali-Frazier moment against Florida and have to remember they thumped the Wildcats 49-0 last season.

Fraud Alert: Kansas. Yes, the Jayhawks are 5-0 and won a rivalry game against Kansas State. But three of their opponents are rated no better than 124 in the latest Sagarin computer rankings. That explains a strength of schedule of 138. Beware.

Flying High: Take you pick -- either South Florida, which has climbed from 35th in the AP preseason poll to fifth or Cincinnati, which failed to receive a preseason vote and now sits 15th.

Rookie Coach of the Year: Jeff Jagodzinski of Boston College and Brian Kelly of Cincinnati (tie). Contrary to the current local debate, some first-year coaches exceed expectations. These two are unbeaten, coaching teams that got jilted by guys who left for "better" college jobs.

Feel-Good Story: Bill Lynch and the Indiana Hoosiers. One more victory and they honor Terry Hoeppner by making his bowl vision a reality.
