It appears that New Jersey may be the first state in the United States to offer legal online gambling. However, the service may be offered only to those who live within the state. The New Jersey State Senate has released a bill that states Casinos would be able to create websites that would allow for poker and other casino games. The idea is for the state to bring in significant revenue by encouraging international Internet gaming companies to open an American headquarters in or around Atlantic City. The city has the office space for such operations. The city also has the casino infrastructure with facilities that would be perfect for housing data storage and technical support centres.
This bill could be the solution to the problems that the land-based casinos in Atlantic City are having. The casinos in this gambling centre are experiencing financial difficulties and New Jersey is experiencing a growing deficit that needs doctoring. After crunching the numbers, the New Jersey Senate determined that allowing this fast revenue growing business into the state would result in the revenue that Atlantic City needs and the revenue that the state of New Jersey needs. The projected revenue is $55 million. The Senate Wagering and Tourism Committee Chairman, Jim Whelan, stated that there are currently 500,000 people in New Jersey laying poker on the Internet. The state would simply be taking steps to regulate a practice that is already occurring. The state would just be making it their own. This move would also create a high number of high tech jobs.
