Betting On The 2008 Sweet 16
by Karl Yu, WinnerOnline
25 March, 2008

SPORTS

It took a day, but eventually Madness hit the NCAA hoops tourney hit and hit hard.

People and bettors who were bemoaning the lack of upsets on Day 1 were giggling with delight the remainder of the long weekend, as a number of notable upsets took place:

- The Midwest’s 10th seed, Davidson upset the seven seed, Gonzaga, by a final of 82-76 but although an upset in terms of seeding it wasn’t a betting upset as Davidson was a 1-point fave on Friday.

- It took OT but Western Kentucky beat the odds (+4) and Drake in the West Region 101-99, also on Friday.

- The San Diego Toreros added another impressive ATS win, as an 11½-point underdog, against the West’s fourth seed, the UConn Huskies by a final score of 70-69.

- Duke barely avoided an upset in their opening game but karma bit the Blue Devils in the butt on Saturday as they failed to cover as 4-point favorite in a 73-67 loss to West Virginia on the Western front.

- Davidson pulled another upset, as a 4½-point underdog, knocking out second seeded Georgetown out of the tournament by a final of 74-70.

Unto the Sweet 16

The Madness is alive and well and here are some teams to keep an eye on:

North Carolina Tar Heels (+365 to win tournament)

Seeded as the No. 1 amongst the 64 team field at the outset, the Tar Heels haven’t faced much adversity in the tournament.

Despite having some relatively big lines (-25 vs. Mount St. Mary’s and -9½ vs. Arkansas) set against it by Vegas bookies, the Tar Heels smashed the spread by an average of 18-points in the tournament so far and are a perfect 2-0 straight up and ATS.
