A Stupid Casino Trick is when we do something stupid in the casino due to impulse, excitement, alcohol or bad judgment. Here's a list you may have done and should avoid.
Stupid Casino Trick #1 - Blackjack, Doubling Down on 12.
Don't gasp. I said this would be a collection of bonehead maneuvers.
The "logic" behind doubling down on a 12 count is that: a. the dealer is showing something poor, like a 4-5-6, and b. you're guessing or counting that the deck is rich in non-face cards and you're due for something low.
Problem is, there isn't one basic strategy chart in the world that recommends doubling down when you are in danger of busting. It's mathematically dumb, and more often than not, based on hunches or instincts. Think about it: even if the deck is stacked with low cards, odds are the dealer will also pull a few low cards. And you're on the hook to double your loss. Don't do it.
Stupid Casino Trick #2 - Poker, Coming to the table with a short stack.
I couldn't leave out this dumb-dumb because it's so popular and we've all done it. I'm going to paint a picture. Tell me if you're in it:
It's your first time playing poker in an online poker room or land-based casino. You've seen pros on TV and you're ready to test yourself. But you're going to start small … $50 sound good?
Do yourself a favor. Don't go to a table without enough chips to compete. With a short stack, you're in danger of getting blinded out from the first deal. There are some games like craps and poker that you simply can't nickel and dime and expect success. Bring enough cash to cover your bets or you're what's called "dead money."
Or better yet, try tournaments. You can buy a huge stack of chips for very little money and play for hours. If you win, you'll win several times your entry, and often even bonus prizes (like seats to the World Series of Poker). And if you lose, you had fun for hours and gained valuable experience.
Stupid Casino Trick #3 - Expiring casino comps.
You play online, right? Did you know as soon as you made your first bet, you started collecting "comps." Unlike in Vegas where comps mean rooms and meals, online comps come to you by way of points. Collect enough and they are redeemable for cash or prizes.
They're the only things casinos consistently give away for free and yet most us insist on throwing them away. Online casinos aren't stupid. They know that most of us play to cash in big and not collect bonus points. So many operators "expire" our points after a certain point of non-redemption. And it's legal: the rules are laid out in their terms and conditions.
So don't be stupid: monitor your comps and don't let them go to waste.
Stupid Casino Trick #4 - Keno, (Enough Said).
I like Keno. I really do. But this website is called "Winner" online. So how can we consider the worst odds in the house anything but a Stupid Casino Trick.
Face it: Keno has terrible odds. And the more you risk, the worse they get. If you play one number, your odds are 3:1. Two numbers jumps to 16:1. Pick five numbers and you're at 1,550:1. Pick 15 numbers, and your odds are 400,000,000:1.
If you're going to eat those kinds of insurmountable odds, you might as well buy a lottery ticket and take your chances on a real jackpot.
Stupid Casino Trick #5 - All games, Martingale Betting System.
Even if you haven't heard the name, you're familiar with the system. The Martingale system is a series of doubled bets. Lose $5, bet $10 the next time. Lose $10, bet $20 … until you win back all your cash.
There is a HUGE problem with this style of betting when it comes to online gambling. You would be amazed how quickly you reach the maximum wager amount. And if you hit an especially bad streak, you are on the hook for a huge loss. And we all know bad streaks happen.
Stay within your limits, enjoy the action and set modest win/loss money management goals. There's only two words for that system: Common Sense.
