The European Union is working on regulating online gambling within its member states. However, Malta objected to the EU’s definition of illegal gambling. It is agreed upon across the board that internet poker websites and other online casino games need to be regulated to reduce the instance of fraud that has been known to occur on these websites. The definition of illegal gambling is the act of operators not complying with the national law of the country in which the services are provided. The laws, however, must be in compliance with the principles of the EU treaty.
Malta’s opposing view is that the current definition is not accurately reflecting the circumstances of the current moment and recent developments. The Maltese have the most advanced regulations when it comes to online gambling and are in full compliance with the legislation put in place by the EU. Malta’s checks and controls ensure the integrity of the operations that occur within its borders. However, despite this compliance, countries that are not a part of the EU and do not meet the regulations set by the EU could be considered an operator offering illegal gambling.
