Levy Refusal Causes Government Enquiry 11th of June 2010
The Singapore government has been placed in the spotlight after an incident at it’s new Marina Bay Casino. An incident involving 15 diners has received media attention when the diners could not exit the building from the non gambling side and had to walk through the casino floor to exit, due to some broken down lifts. Under the Casino Control Act, any Singapore permanent residents entering the gambling floor must pay the casino levy of $100.00, the diners refused to pay and are now having to front up in court to explain the matter.
Lawyers are now asking for the Casino Control Act itself to be adjusted to allow for special circumstances like building problems and also emergencies like fire to ensure small incidents are looked after. By failing to collect the levy, Marina Bay Sands stands to receive disciplinary action from the government which cane take the form of a letter of censure, variation of the terms of a casino license or fined for a maximum of $1 million dollars.
