A day after it’s much heralded opening, the Singapore casinos have produced it’s first increase in crime statistics when an Indonesian national was arrested for stealing a $500 cell phone from a woman at Singapore’s Changi airport. Paulus Djohar has been jailed for four weeks after being caught by airport security when the crime was reported and security staff were able to apprehend the man.
Paulus Djohar travelled to Singapore from Malaysia and decided to try his luck on the tables at the new Resorts World Sentosa. Losing all of his $1,000 spending money, Paulus resorted to stealing to try and sell what he stole to make some money. With the new casinos opening in Singapore, it is the government’s aim to increase government revenue and have bonus tourist attractions for the small island nation. Unfortunately, with any new gambling venture comes increased social costs like crime and excessive gambling.
