Indian Government Applies Brakes 22nd October 2009
The Indian State of Goa is facing an uphill battle with the Indian Government deciding to increase the taxes charged on Goan casinos and also legislating to increase the entry fee of $4 to $40 dollars. This comes as a response to many underage gamblers found within the Goan casinos. Goa is the only state within India where gambling is legal. The highly popular tourist spot attracts 2.4 million tourists a year, many of them Indian nationals. With the dazzling lights and high class attractions, the government feels that the children of many middle class families have been encouraged to rob money or take money from their parent’s to fund gambling in Goan casinos.
The increase in taxes and entry fees threatens the livelihood of many of the Goan Casinos. Some casinos like the High Street Casino, have seen visitor numbers drop 90% since the legislation has begun and is struggling to survive. The reaction to all this is laying off staff and increased unemployment in Goa. The Goan casinos rely heavily on the overseas trade with many foreigners visiting the area to party on the beach and have a bet at the casinos.
