Harrah’s Entertainment has signalled to the world that it believes that the Macau market is set to open up with more licences to be handed out to casino operators. One of the largest casino operators in the world surprised the world back in 2002 when it did not bid for a licences to operate in Macau whilst it’s competitors like Wynn, MGM, Sands, etc all decided to setup in the new Asian gambling hub. Despite missing the gambling dragon boat then, Harrah’s has already brought in investment dollars into Macau, buying out a golf course in Macau’s Cotai Strip for US$577.7 million.
Harrah’s sees Asia as largely underpenetrated and is well set for amove into Macau’s neighbours in Taiwan and Japan. There are currently discussions in parliament for gambling to expand in those areas but these are still years away from reality. Patience is a virtue and with Harrah’s and all the acquisitions that it has made in the past few years, it is patiently waiting to pounce on any Asian opportunities.
