Gambler Ordered To Pay Back Loan 17th February 2010
An Australian court has ordered notorious gambling addict Harry Kakavas to repay more than $1.12 million Australian dollars back to the Paradise Island Casino in the Bahamas. Harry had tried to dodge the repayments by claiming the casino had exploited the fact that he had a gambling addiction when the casino provided him with a $US 1 million line of credit to gamble with whilst on his honeymoon. It only took five hours for the $1 million dollars to end up in the hands of the casino, and Harry owing the casino $1 million.
The casino then used the Victorian Supreme Court to sue Harry Kakavas to try and recover the lost money. Harry’s defence was based on the fact that he had a psychiatric condition which renders him completely inable to resist gambling. The judge felt that Harry decided to go to the Bahamas on his own interest and was not pressured by anybody to go to the casino. Harry Kakavas has previously tried to dodge an order to repay Crown casino in the courts of Australia and also failing.
