Football Suffers With Polish Gambling Laws 11th March 2010
Polish online gambling laws changed in January 2010 and have taken a step backwards rather than advancing forwards. Although online gambling has not been abolished, it has been banned from sponsoring public companies and clubs like football clubs. The Polish Football Federation in 2009 had a very healthy relationship with Swedish online sports betting company Unibet, but has had to break the relationship due to the new laws.
The federation is now struggling to find a new sponsor with the same level of support that Unibet had to offer. The greatest revenue earner for many football leagues happens to be sponsorship, and now with a very lucrative market abolished, it is tough for the football clubs to stay financially viable. The ban in online gambling operators sponsoring local football clubs comes with the Polish government’s corruption scandal last year, with the government now trying to increase their popularity by changing the laws to avoid any further gambling related corruption.
