March Madness Betting 2007
by Karl Yu,, WinnerOnline
15 February, 2007

SPORTS

The Super Bowl’s over and so is the Pro Bowl. All is quiet along the betting front. But the scene in a month’s time won’t be nearly as tranquil. Bookmakers and handicapping services alike will be swamped and office workers will be scrambling to complete their NCAA basketball tournament brackets.

It’s the stretch drive in college hoops and March Madness is on the horizon. T-minus one month and counting.

There are a lot of teams in college basketball, with over 330 teams in Division I and only 65 tourney berths up for grabs. Here are some teams that are favored and a couple that are on the bubble.

Florida (+275, 9-8-1 ATS)

The Gators stand a very good chance of defending their title. They have about 10 players returning from last year’s championship team, including 2006 tournament MVP Joakim Noah and this year’s leading scorer Taurean Green (13.6 ppg). They are ranked No. 1 overall in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN polls and team scoring is very balanced.

They have five players who average 10 ppg and above, including both Green and Noah and are the SEC’s top scoring offense averaging 81.6 points-per-games.

Ohio State (+800, 13-9-1 ATS)

It’s a role reversal of sorts for both Ohio State and Florida, at least as the rankings stand currently in college basketball. Back in November before Bowl Season began, the Ohio State football Buckeyes were ranked No. 1 and the Florida football Gators were No. 2.

As of Week 15, both the AP and USAToday/ESPN polls had Florida’s college hoops team No. 1 and Ohio State No. 2. It seems as if the shoe is on the other foot.

The Buckeyes are led in scoring and rebounding by freshman 7-foot C Greg Oden (15.3 ppg, 9.4 rbg) and freshman G Daequan Cook is second in scoring with an average of 12.1 points a game.

Ohio State leads the Big Ten in both scoring (75.9 ppg) and rebounding (36.2 rbg).

Wisconsin (+800, 11-9-1 ATS)

Currently kings of the Big Ten, the Badgers actually have a better overall record than the Buckeyes but sit lower in the polls. Wisconsin is led in scoring by Senior F Alando Tucker (20.0 ppg). Unfortunately, only one other player on the roster averages points in the double digits and that is Kammron Taylor (13.0 ppg).

The team is the Big Ten’s second best in rebounding (36.1) and points (73.3).
