Will Stanford or Saint Joseph's Men's Basketball Teams Go Undefeated
18 February 2004

PRESS RELEASE

SOURCE: Casablanca Sports

Zapote, Costa Rica -- The last time a men"s NCAA Division I college basketball team went undefeated through the entire regular season was over 13 years ago. This season there is a chance for two teams to match the feat accomplished by the 1991 UNLV Running Rebels, led by All-American forward Larry Johnson and Coach Jerry, "The Shark" Tarkanian.

Both the Saint Joseph Hawks (22-0) and the Stanford Cardinals (20-0) are playing at a high enough level for there to be serious talk of not just one, but both teams going undefeated. "There have been a lot of teams that have flirted with undefeated seasons in recent years, but these two teams not only have the talent, but more importantly, the confidence to roll through the regular season perfectly," said BetCBSports Senior Odds Maker, Dan "The Man" Johnson. "Both teams have also gotten past the most difficult parts of their schedule and could be on a collision course for a truly historic national championship game."

There have been only 12 teams in NCAA major college basketball history to go through the regular season undefeated, and seven which went undefeated all the way to becoming national champions. Those seven teams, the 1956 San Francisco Dons, the 1957 North Carolina Tarheels, The 1964, 1967, 1972, and 1973 UCLA Bruins, and the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers, are widely recognized as some of the best teams in the history of intercollegiate athletics. The 2004 version of Stanford and Saint Joseph's men's basketball squads aren't drawing those comparisons yet, but an undefeated run to a national championship in today's college sports landscape, could definitely change some people's opinions.
