Feature A Visual Guide to Roulette Betting by Grant Eastbourne, WINNERonline.com 26 February 2002
Roulette is a great game if you're looking for a break from the cards, but not everyone knows how to place a bet at a roulette table. You're betting on where the ball lands, but where can you put your chips, can you bet on more than one number, and most importantly, how much does each type of bet pay?
Well, there are nine different roulette bets, each of which offer different payouts. Six of these bets are inside bets and three are outside. Limits for both types of bets vary, and are set by the house. Players also have the option of making more than one type of bet if they wish.
People should always remember that there are two types of roulette tables - American (double '0') and European (single '0'). Odds for American roulette are 5.26% in favor of the house but they drop to 2.70% in European roulette, so play European if you've got a choice.
Here's what each different bet, along with the payouts, looks like on an American roulette table.
Inside Bets
Inside bets cover all individual numbers from 1-36, as well as 0 and 00. These types of bets offer higher payouts than outside bets.
Straight (or Straight-up) Bet - Player bets on any single number on the table including 0 or 00. Chip(s) are placed on the number. Pays 35:1
Split Bet - Player bets on any two numbers on the table including 0 or 00. Chip(s) are placed on the line between two numbers. Pays 17:1
Street (or Trio) Bet - Player bets on three numbers in a horizontal row. Chip(s) are placed on the line at the end of the row. Pays 11:1
Corner Bet - Player bets on any group of four numbers on the table. Chip(s) are placed at the intersection of the four numbers. Pays 8:1
Line (or Six Number) Bet - Player bets on six numbers in two adjoining rows. Chip(s) are placed at the end of the line between the two rows. Pays 5:1
Five-Number Bet - Player bets on 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. This bet gives the house the highest odds and should be avoided. Chip(s) are placed at the intersection of 2 and the line between 0 and 00. This bet is only possible in American roulette. Pays 6:1
