Europe Points South
22nd December 2009

Online gambling in Europe has taken a slight hiccup with the European Court of Justice signalling that it prefers to maintain that European countries remain with sole online betting operators. This has particular ramifications for online European betting giants like Betfair and Ladbrokes who have been eyeing a spot in the Netherlands but have been temporarily slowed down.

This gives current monopolies in the country more power to exercise their monopoly status and continue to operate without any competition. The European Gaming and Betting Association made a statement that the legality of Netherland’s exclusive license continually handed to De Lotto without any form of tender. There is expected to be more lobbying to try and persuade the Dutch government to introduce more egaming licences.
