Estonia has begun the new year by executing a new and revised online gambling act that reverses it’s previous online gambling status. The new online gambling act requires that all companies that provide online gambling services need to be located within the country. This is a move by the country to create more tax revenue through taxes. The news means that many online poker players may have to move abroad if they wish to continue their trade.
Estonia has moved against the rest of the European Union which has demanded members allow for free trade amongst the EU. Other countries which have decided to control the local gambling market include Germany and France. Many observers feel that Estonia’s move will change back to a liberalisation course in the near future to comply with the rest of the EU and allow for more competition in the online gaming market.
