China Sends A Clear Message
1st January 2010

Chinese president Hu Jintao has sent a clear message to Macau that he is expecting changes from the gambling economy. President Hu has indicated that he would like to see Macau diversify it’s industry rather than just rely on the gambling industry as it’s only source of income. Rather than head down the road Las Vegas style and be completely leveraged towards gambling, the president would like Macau to explore other industries to ensure during a recession, not all of the industries go down.

Hu Jintao has named other social issues like education reform and living standards at the top priorities of Macau. Currently, many of the local youths think that getting an education means getting a job at a local casino. Macau’s gambling industry is still heavily reliant on the Chinese visa restrictions. Whenever visa restrictions ease, the casino revenues rise, whenever they tighten, the casino revenues follow suit.
