Like economies in other countries, Singapore has seen its fair share of struggle. Suddenly, a Las Vegas casino saw an opportunity and started resurrecting the economy. The Las Vegas Sands Casino opened the Marina Bay Sands in May 2010 and is already making a difference. As of June 4, 2010, over half a million people had already visited the casino. This is a turnout that has economists readjusting their projections for the economy in 2010. Many economists feel that the casino is going to far exceed the revenue expectations for 2010. This determination was made simply based upon the short-term turnout.
There have, however, been some consequences of this wise move on part of Las Vegas Sands. Those Asian gamblers who frequented Las Vegas are now deciding to stay closer to home. This is causing a concern in Las Vegas because it has resulted in some lost revenue. However, Las Vegas Sands is not the only casino that has embedded itself in Singapore. MGM Mirage and Wynn Resorts have establishments in the country as well. As it stands, 1/3 of the gamblers coming to Marina Bay Sands are actually Singapore residents. The others are arriving from Korea, Japan, and China.
