Cambodia Wants $100 Million Casino 17th February 2010
February 26th will see a brand new casino open in Cambodia. The town of Svay Rieng will feature the sparkling Titan King Casino that has cost $100 million to build. Situated close to the border with Vietnam, the casino is situated strategically to target Thai and Vietnamese tourists. The casino occupies 2.5 hectares of land and employs 6,000 people. The owner Kith Thieng, is a Cambodian business tycoon who’s business includes hotels, fast food restaurants, mobile phones and also banks and television.
Cambodia’s tourist industry has been hit hard since the global financial crisis. Since it is a third world country, it struggles to come up with the same type of marketing dollars that developed countries use to lure tourists. It’s tourism sector is the second highest economic activity, with the casino now aiming to help boost the economy. The casino is hoping to match it with the likes of Macau and Singapore to bring in Asian tourists, particularly Chinese gamblers to the country.
