The Bulgarian parliament has voted in favour of raising the tax rate for taxes on games of chance from 10% to 12% as part of their amendments to their tax acts. The rise in gambling tax will be implemented in 2010. This rise in tax rate has long been expected since the country’s sweepstakes draws, raffles and lotteries are already at the 12% mark, with the latest rise bringing the games of chance into parity with the other gambling activities. It is expected that the rise in tax will boost state revenue.
The issue of tax increase in gambling has had much debate in Bulgaria with some politicians calling for a higher raise. Other more conservative parties had previously motioned for a complete ban on gambling in the country.
