Bulgarian casinos have signalled to the market the tough times that it is experiencing with many legally registered gambling halls and bingo halls closing down since January 2009. Due to hard economic times, the gambling businesses have seen their revenue sliced in half since the start of the year and this has in turn affected slot machine sales, employment and government revenue. This has led to more illegal operations and laid off workers now joining criminal operations.
The Bulgarian government has strengthened fiscal control on slot machines but its grip on gambling scams and internet gambling is far weaker due to the complexity of tracking these activities. Many gambling halls are now renting unregistered gambling equipment and software from China which is another source of concern for the Bulgarian government.
