Australian Slots Losing To Online
10th February 2010

Australia happens to be one of the biggest live slot machine players in the world. For a country with a population of only 22 million, it is something to boast about. But lately, the slot machines are making way for a new type of gambling. Slots is still featured in many clubs and pubs in every residential area, but it is no longer patronised by both young and old, as it use to be. A Queensland hotelier invested $5 million recently in improving his slot machines, but has seen a 20 percent drop in revenue.

Online gambling is the phenomenon that is making it’s way through Australia. More of the younger generation are preferring to switch online rather than head to the local pub of club for a spin. The Australian government feels that at least $300 million leaves via offshore gambling and is keen to regulate it to ensure it nets back it’s fair share. The government knows that it’s tax revenue from live poker machines has numbered days and is preparing for tighter online regulation.
