NFL Prop Bets
Whether you like to wager on propositions or not, there are some interesting bets out there to take advantage of.
Will Terrell Owens be fined or suspended (sportsbooks.com)
(-400 Yes)
This prop is the closest to thing to a sure bet out there so act fast if you want to cash in, because a T.O. suspension could happen in the blink of an eye.
Just like a balloon that has been over inflated and is ready to burst, so is the relationship between Terrell Owens and his current coach, Bill Parcells.
Owens missed a chunk of this year’s training camp with what he calls a hamstring injury. An MRI by the Dallas medical staff came back negative, but T.O. insisted on calling in his own people and missed 14 straight practices. Both head coach Bill Parcells and Owens said there wasn’t any animosity or controversy but consider this: Back in his New England days, then Patriot—and ironically enough current Cowboy—WR Terry Glenn acted in similar fashion and the Big Tuna responded by benching him and referring to him in the feminine.
Dallas’ prize WR returned and made five training sessions in-a-row but was held out of an exhibition game against the New Orleans Saints. “Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick . . .”
Update: Terrell Owens was fined by Dallas for missing a team meeting because he overslept. This prop bet paid out before the season even started.
Bet365 is offering a number of prop bet specials but the window closes on September 9th and 10th for many of these so be forewarned.
How many TDs will Brett Favre throw for in the regular season?
22-24 TDs (+240)
There are a lot of question marks surrounding the Packer receiving corps but Brett Favre is too talented of a QB and too much of a competitor to throw under 22 for two straight seasons. He also lacks solid receiving threats such as Robert Brooks and Antonio Freeman so 25 or more may be a little too much to ask.
Favre’s current cast of WRs do have potential though. Rod Gardner once caught for 208 yards in a game and Marc Boerigter played well when he was a rookie with KC and was a receiving threat in the CFL. Add in Packer vet Donald Driver, who is always reliable and coming off back-to-back seasons with 1,200+ yards receiving and 22-24 passing TDs for Favre seems likely.
Most points in the regular season
Adam Vinatieri: Indianapolis Colts (+700)
AKA the best kicker prop bet, Adam Vinatieri should win this one hands down. Vinatieri is the league’s best clutch kicker and that was when he played outdoors in New England. With a move to the controlled climate inside the RCA Dome and a chance to play alongside the prolific Colts offense, Adam Vinatieri should have the most points and Peyton Manning won’t think his kicker is an idiot either.
Update: Contrary to earlier reports, Adam Vinatieri doesn't have a broken bone in his non-kicking leg, but rather a sprained ligament in his left foot. Depending on the severity of the injury, Vinatieri may not be ready for the season opener. You might want to hold off on him until the Colts elaborate on his status.
Most passing yards in the regular season
Peyton Manning (+500)
After a disappointing end to last season, you can bet Peyton Manning is motivated for another season. Even though Peyton passed for 3,747 yards last year—Manning was rested the last two games—4,000 passing yard seasons are pretty much the norm in Indianapolis. The Colts lost Edgerrin James but all of Peyton’s favorite passing targets are back, so expect Peyton Manning to return to form.
2006/07 AP NFL Rookie of the Year (Sportsbook.com)
DeAngelo Williams (+800) or Joseph Addai (+500)
It’s always tough to predict who will pull to the head of the rookie class but consider the following.
Reggie Bush is currently the odds on to win at +200. He has impressed with an average of 6.6 yards a carry, but will he be running with such gusto after his body takes a pounding midway through the season? The Saints have a suspect offensive line with a lot of new faces, so the 2005 Heisman winner may find the going tough as the season progresses.
On the other hand, Joseph Addai of Indianapolis or DeAngelo Williams of Carolina are stepping into ideal situations. The Colts lost Edgerrin James so Addai will be competing with Dominic Rhodes for the starting position.
The Carolina Panthers still have DeShaun Foster who has been plagued by the injury bug for most of his career. Should he falter, Williams will step up to the plate and will do so with an o-line that blocked its way into the NFC championship last year.
