Bad economic times and increasing competition from other states has lead to Atlantic City casinos cutting 1,000 jobs in the month of September. Total workers in the 11 casino hotels now total 37,337, a very disheartening number compared to 51,560 in July 1997 when the industry was at its peak. This low level of employment has not been as low since the late 1980s and signals the current mood amongst the operators at Atlantic City.
Atlantic City casinos always trim their payroll as business shed off excess staff after labour day. Many casinos put on extra staff during the summer but cut them off after labour day, this year's cut has been far higher than previous years. Nearby Pennsylvania slots parlours have picked up a lot of the once Atlantic City gambler so their employment figures have been stronger as a reflection of gambler having more options to gamble with.
