France Looking To Legalize Online Gambling?
by Karl Yu, WinnerOnline
11 April, 2008

NEWS

Much like Italy, France seems to be pulling an about face with its attitudes towards online gambling.

A report originating in French daily Aujourd'hui—translates to "Today"—says that the European country should open up its borders to online gambling, possibly by next year, and that the framework for discussions leading to online gambling regulations are in place.

According to reports, Horse race wagering would be allowed exclusively through tote betting and would follow rules and regulations established by state monopoly operator, Mutuel Urbain (PMU), and other types would be allowed but would adhere to stringent guidelines.

France is also said to be planning to negotiate with other European Union nations, such as Belgium, Holland and Germany, on what is being called a "system" that would allow for a partnership between the countries and France.

French Budget Minister Eric Woerth says that the online gambling regulation plans are not in response to threats of possible legal action from the European Commission.
