With the French Tennis Federation attempting to stop bwin, Ladbrokes and Betfair from offering wagers on the French Open, bwin has struck back.
According to a report in the Associated Press, bwin is countersuing the organizers of the French Open citing slander.
"Following claims by the French tennis federation that services offered by online sports betting operators present a danger to the ethics of sport," bwin is suing the organizers of the French Open for damages before a Paris court," the online gaming company said in a statement.
According to a spokesperson from bwin, the company is seeking €1 million in damages.
A loss in this case could be a blow to professional tennis, which was rocked by a betting controversy last year when Betfair voided bets on a match involving Nikolay Davydenko and Martin Vasallo Arguello after noticing irregular betting patterns.
Subsequent reports suggested that players had been asked to fix matches.
A court in Liege, Belgium heard testimony both sides and expects to hand down a decision before the start of the French Open at Roland Garros which begins in late May.
