James Packer's Crown Casino has had to answer questions in court about why it failed to declare $700 million in revenue that high roller gamblers are turning over at its tables. Under Victorian state law, any gambler who has been excluded from an interstate casino, must not be allowed at Crown casino, otherwise all winnings are to be forfeited to the state.
Crown executives lured Harry Kakavas to Crown's baccarat tables between June 2005 and August 2006 after being banned from Star City Casino and lost over $20 million at Crown casino. He is now suing Crown casino for luring him to the casino despite excluding himself from the casino since 1998 and knowing that he has a pathological gambling disorder.
Kakavas' lawyers have announced that the casino had an obligation to disclose to the state government that they were allowing a banned gambler back in. Crown casino has come back with Kakavas gambled on knowing that he was excluded from the casino. The court case continues.
