Las Vegas Sands have continued to release announcements that gambling is on the slide due to the current economy by announcing a reduction in its Las Vegas work force, laying off another 194 people last week. This follows a reduction in staff in March where 280 staff were laid off to help ease budget constraints. The company has pointed again to declining business due to the economy, particularly at its Venetian Casino and Resort as well as the Palazzo with workers from all departments feeling the effects.
Sands still continues to look for expansionary opportunities to prepare itself for the next upswing in the world economy with new casinos to opening in Bethlehem Pennsylvania and its continued expansion into Asia, with Singapore opening early 2010. Sands also announced that it would cut back roughly 4,000 employees back in May, globally, due to a decline in business at its Macau casinos, around 20% reduction in its Sands Macau workforce.
