Bahamas Getting Tough On Gaming Laws 13 June, 2009
Leading through from surveys done over several years, the Bahamians are gradually coming to the realization that there should be national control of the national lottery and all gambling outlets. To make the legitimate businesses, they, like the casinos, should pay tax. With the whole nation turning towards great acceptance of gambling, there now is consensus to regulate operations.
To solve this problem, a committee has been formed to comprehensively audit the country’s gaming laws, and is expected to generate new recommendations in a month’s time. The committee formed is comprised of tourism stakeholders and government officials.
Currently, Bahamian citizens and legal residents are prohibited from gambling. Foreign visitors are allowed to gamble. Whether locals will be allowed to gamble or not remains to be seen, but there is wide belief that this will lead to an expanding customer base for the casinos.
