Republican Barney Frank of Massachusetts made a speech at the main event of the World Series of Poker on Sunday claiming that he believed that Internet gambling was a right for all US citizens and had to be protected. In attendance of his speech were 1,700 poker players all ready to take their shot at the World Series of Poker Main Event title.
Barney Frank has been the leading congressman opposing the UIGEA ruling by the US government which prohibits financial institutions from taking credit card payments, checks or electronic transfer to settle online wagers. To restore online gambling rights, Barney Frank sponsored H.R. 2046, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act that would make internet gambling legal again.
Barney Frank’s efforts have been praised by poker players world wide even though Barney himself does not gamble. Many professional players and amateur players believe that online gambling will continue to grow world wide regardless of whether the laws in the US change or not.
