The Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation has introduced an item that will aid in the battle against underage gambling.
"[It] has developed software that parents can install on home computers that will block access to gambling websites," reports thechronicleherald.ca
"The software is said to be the first of its kind in the world."
The gaming corporation commissioned a study that found minors were gambling online much more than adults; three times as many says the Chronicle Herald.
According to the study 60 percent of underage gamblers were male and 25 percent were girls and online poker and sportsbetting were prominent.
After seeing the study's results, the NSGC saw fit to develop software to help combat this.
The software searches for gambling URLs and language within a site and the NSGC's president and CEO, Marie Mullally says that it is quite effective.
"It has a heightened or enhanced level of intelligence that allows it to have a 98 percent rate of blocking sites," Mullally explained.
"BetStopper is password-protected and parents will receive an email notification if the program is turned off," the report went on to say.
