Sports Gambling Coming To Delaware?
12 March, 2009

SPORTS

The state of Delaware's proposal to legalize sports betting is a story that has been circulating for a while but it seems like it could be closer to becoming reality.

According to a report by ESPN magazine's Chad Millman, it is a distinct possibility thanks to governor Jack Markell.

One of his platforms prior to being elected last fall, was support for sportsbetting and it looks like governor Markell is about to make good on his pre-election promise.

Citing sources, ESPN magazine says that governor Markell will make a proposal sometime next week.

"Markell's proposal calls for a statewide sports lottery that only allows parlay bets. In a parlay, gamblers have to get two bets right in order to win," reported Millman.

"It's an idea that has been brewing in Delaware for a while, long before the economy imploded and the state found itself with a budget shortfall of $700M. In fact, a proposal to allow gambling on sports died in the state legislature last year, when then governor Ruth Ann Minner made it clear she'd veto a resulting bill."

It is Markell's rationale that if the state allows slots and horse racing wagers, why not sportsbetting?

The state could definitely use the infusion of cash in light of current economic conditions.

According to nbcphiladelphia.com, "The recent economic turmoil has thrown Delaware into a $700 million budget shortfall. The numbers remain fluid but sports betting could pump $50 to $100 million into Delaware, according to sources."

The addition of sportsbets would not sit well with the National Football League but Markell would like to put his constituents first says ESPN.
