Similar to a tennis match between Nikolay Davydenko and Martin Vasallo Arguello at the Sopot Open back in August 2007, a soccer (football) match between Weymouth and Rushden & Diamonds saw irregular betting patterns and is under investigation.
In the Sopot Open match, betting exchange Betfair saw the strange betting numbers and after consultation with the Association of Tennis Professionals, they voided bets.
According to the northamptonchron.co.uk, "Struggling non-League Weymouth FC had to field its youth team against Diamonds on Saturday after members of the first team went on strike over fears about medical insurance cover."
News of the junior team taking the pitch broke before the game and bookmakers saw a larger-than-normal betting volume going to Rushden & Diamonds, 10 times as many bets to be exact.
The junior Weymouth team was hammered 9-0 by Rushden & Diamonds.
According to the guardian.co.uk, some bookmakers paid out £1 million but Totesport realized something was wrong based on the betting patterns and halted betting.
"People have got wind of the team news before the bookies have. This sort of thing happens in the lower leagues from time to time," Totesport spokesman George Primarolo told the Guardian.
"Normally £30,000 to £40,000 would be paid out on a match like this across the whole industry," a spokesperson from Coral told the northamptonchron.co.uk.
"But we paid out in the region of £100,000 and we are 20 percent of the industry. It was an exceptional amount of money for a lower league game."
The Football Association said it would investigate the situation.
