The World Series of Poker's schedule for 2009 was released and like the title of that Led Zeppelin movie, the song remains the same—at least in many respects.
Set for the Rio Convention Center's Amazon Room, this year's tournament, the 40th edition, will run from May 27-November 10, 2009, although the tournament won't be running for five straight months.
The WSOP introduced a controversial new tourney rule last year, where the field at the Texas Hold'em main event would be whittled down to nine, who would then break and resume play months later.
The rational being the amateur players in the group could get further lessons and line up sponsorships.
The move wasn't popular amongst some but the move proved to be wise as the ratings for the final table increased by about 46 percent and the WSOP will go again with the break this year with the field whittled down to the "November Nine" on July 15 and the final table commencing on November 7.
Speaking of ratings and television, ESPN will once again hold exclusive broadcast rights and will air the final table, which takes place November 7-10, 2009, in prime time.
57 gold bracelet events will take place over 50 days, including a special one-time only event, a $40,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament in honor of the World Series of Poker's 40 years.
"Whether you play poker around the kitchen table or consider yourself a professional, you will find a comfortable seat at the 2009 World Series of Poker," said WSOP commish Jeffery Pollack.
"This year's schedule offers more variety than ever before and we look forward to welcoming players from around the world to the Rio for our 40th annual extravaganza this summer."
Prospective players can sign up at the main cage of the Rio in Las Vegas or at www.worldseriesofpoker.com.
